What makes you the Next Music Star?
We are a new kind of group that brings family, friends and supporters together on this journey, igniting their own creativity, and making them an integral part of the experience. To do this, we draw our musical inspiration from a shared space in which we grapple with some of the most intriguing and challenging aspects of the human experience. We take our time to craft songs, music videos and live performances to a high personal standard, both to share a part of ourselves with the world and to hopefully reveal the connections between us all. We enjoy and appreciate all aspects of making music, including writing, recording, performing, making new friends and learning along the way. So I suppose we would sum it up by saying that music is our way of relating to the world - and we hope that what we have to say will enrich people's lives.
What do you love about music and performing?
We have a fun process of making music. It starts with a melodic concept that comes late at night, getting me out of bed to record a quick video before it is lost to the ether forever. In the morning, I share the idea with my family. My daughter, who is an avid poet, then crafts a free verse poem building upon the concept. We then sit in a cafe for hours discussing, sometimes fervidly, how to put the lyrics to music in the most compelling way. Then the real work begins as we set about arranging, rehearsing and recording the instrumental and vocal parts, honing the video concept and filming and producing the music video. Initially, we started doing this as a way of capturing family memories in video form - like a family album. But it has evolved into our great love and a cherished form of expression. Live performance is the culmination of it all. I love that we get to do this as a family and to see it all through my young daughter's eyes.
Who are your biggest music inspirations and dream collaborators?
There is something very interesting about every major era of modern music - a unique energy signature. Though we've been exposed to a lot of music through the years, we write from a truly original space. Therefore, I can't honestly point to another artist as a muse in that regard. I can say that we are inspired by nature, the change of the seasons and other creative channels. I'm pleased to say that my dream collaboration is with my family. My wife Roujeanne is the heart and soul of our home and my daughter Milan is the heart and soul of Millennium. Her unique worldview and poetic sensibilities have shaped Millennium in important ways. Looking ahead, we are excited by the possibility of fusing musical styles to create something unexpected by collaborating with artists in different genres and seeing what that alchemy might produce. We are also interested in involving more young people from our community in our project.
What would you do with the $10,000 Grand Prize?
If selected for this honor, we intend to direct the majority of the winnings towards bringing other young people from economically disenfranchised groups into our project. We feel that creativity, and the arts in general, have been increasingly undervalued by society despite its importance to our culture. What is a civilization, after all, if you take away its art, dance, film, music or literature? What legacy will we leave for future generations? We also plan to use the proceeds to attend workshops and build relationships with other writers, composers, producers and executives. We seek to share ideas about how we can collectively develop talent and encourage collaboration among the youth and foster a more positive creative environment for them. As parents of a fifteen-year-old daughter who is an artist, writer and musician, we have a very personal stake in the outcome of this effort.
